Are laser printers better then inkjet?

Looking for a monochrome, black ink only, laser printer. I need better quality, resolution, etc.. print jobs. Are laser printers better then inkjet?
For text and line art, laser beats ink jet hands down - there's no comparison. It's cheaper, faster, and higher quality. The toner isn't water soluble like ink, so it's as water proof as the media you print on. The edges are razor sharp, and the black is really black, and not dark purple. Printing an entire black page with an inkjet gives you a soggy mess, but on a laser printer, you get a black page. Resolution on a laser is superior to an inkjet...

However, graphics will look like crap on the laser when compared to an inkjet... even if both are printed in b/w.

Color lasers do a good enough job with graphics, but a photo will look much better on a photo quality inkjet (but a dye sub printer would be the best). Are laser printers better then inkjet?
laser printers are faster, sharper and cheaper per page than inkjet. you can also find monochrome lasers in the $50 range. The toner cartridges might cost more than the printer but they typically do a few thousand pages. The first cartridge which comes with the laser is typically a starter cartridge which only does half (or less). You can sometimes find refill toner on ebay for much cheaper.
Laser printers are faster, the printouts better quality, and the printouts last longer because they are burned or fused into the paper rather than being ink on top of the page.

However be prepared for ';sticker shock'; when you look at the price of a toner cartridge for a laserjet. They can run a couple hundred dollars. But they last so much longer than an inkjet cartridge that they are are actually cheaper in the long run. We may go through a couple dozen inkjet cartridges before you go through one laserjet cartridge.

However, they are lousy on pictures.....
Yes, laser printers are definately better. I used to have an inkjet printer, and after a while the ink just refused to dry.

Laser printers are more expensive in the long run though.
well laser printers r costly nd their printing cost is 2222 much cheaper nd inkjet printers r cheaper bt their printing cost is high

Why doesn't HP recommend using economode on its mono laser printers?

You lose quality and you use less toner.

By using less toner you are buying less toner therefore HP is recommending that you should be buying toner more often. Why doesn't HP recommend using economode on its mono laser printers?
probably so you have to buy the cartridges more oftenWhy doesn't HP recommend using economode on its mono laser printers?
Over a long period of time, the drum gets excessive wear by using econo mode a long time. It is good for getting a print job finished quickly, but not for continuous use. If you have a 500 page print job, no problem, but if you set it that way indefinitely, the drum will act up before the toner is empty.

Where can I get replacement drums and other ';consumables'; for Brother Mono Laser Printers in Regional Aus?

This site should help you.

Can modern home printers (laser or deskjet) print off sheets of labels reasonably quickly?

It will do it but remember if it is an ink jet printer the labels will smear or dissolve if they get wet.

They will also fade badly in the sun - even the black ones which are mixed colour inks not 'soot'

Laser printers do not suffer from this problem.

RoyS.Can modern home printers (laser or deskjet) print off sheets of labels reasonably quickly?
Yes but it depends on the printer. Can modern home printers (laser or deskjet) print off sheets of labels reasonably quickly?
yes without a problem. MS word has a label feature with many label formats to choose from. Most home printers will have an additional feeder tray to put the label sheet into. I wouldnt recommend doing mass labels in the normal a4 tray as sometimes it jams and gets the glue over the rollers. most printers these days print as reasonable speeds and will print labels as the same speed as normal printing.
Yes it can, but you have to remember a few things,

first, it can only go as fast as your printer goes, if you have a slow printer then it will print slow.

printing in black prints faster than color,

make sure you have all your settings correct on the printer before you print

make sure you have the paper in the right way

and check your set up on the computer and that your printing the right size labels to the right size label paper.

good luck.
No problem.
Yes, depending on your printers speeds.
most newer printer (post 1995) can do it. you need to set up you sofware for it. use the help feature in your software to figure it out. you need to tell the comp that you want labels and in what size and all. they have presets already installed so you have to pick the right number according to the paper your using.

Why are people not adopting Color Laser printers?

I am considering to buy a color laser printer.

Despite prices for color laser printers have fallen, I think not many people are buying them.

I would like to find out why. I wonder what could be drivers who have prevented them and conversely compelling drivers that would tip them over to buy.

I was told that the cost per page to print a mono copy on a laser color printer is same or close to when compared to a laser mono printer. What's more you can have the flexibility to print color if I want to anytime too. I wonder if this is true.

Oh yes, what brands/models would be a good short list and if I have to choose one brand/model, which should stand out clearly from the rest?

Thanks..Why are people not adopting Color Laser printers?
While prices on color laser printers continue to drop for home users, typically, the toner cartridges are often lower capacity than most office printers.

Most of the lower priced printer supplies are not yet widely available and won't be for several months, so consider that before dropping your cash.

If you're considering purchasing one, make sure you can get aftermarket compatible or remanufactured toner at a reasonable price and from a reputable dealer.

Refilled is NOT remanufactured and you'll be able to tell the difference because the packaging will say ';Type 1 cartridge'; on remans or ';Type 2 cartridge'; on refills.

The HP 2605dn is one of the best values out there right now. It's a solid workhorse with a built in network card. Colors are bright and great looking. It's not ultra fast, but it's HP and that spells ';r-e-l-i-a-b-l-e';.

The only issue is that the consumables are expensive and only provide 2500 pages per cartridge set. Tough it out for a few months and high quality compatible replacement cartridges will be available for 1/2 the cost of OEM cartridges. Why are people not adopting Color Laser printers?
Most current colour lasers make quite adequate photo printers for ';general use'; but do lack the unltra high resolution of the inkjets. There are 2 things to think about,

1 : What do you really plan to use it for. 2: What are most important criteria ? Cost of purchase ? Cost of running ? Output of colour ? Convenience ?

Generally with ALL printers, inkjet and laser, the more you pay up front to buy it, the lower the running costs will be. A ';CHEAP '; printer of any kind is subsidised from it's ongoing consumables cost. An ';entry level'; colour laser will cost as much to refill with 4 toners (if they all die together) as to replace, while a more expensive printer will cost less to refill, or will at least go longer between refills.

Look at cost of consumables and compare pages / cost. Inkjet carts are cheaper, but last no where near as long, also for quality output on inkjet you really do need the good quality coated paper.

With colour laser you will ger ';decent'; prints on ';cheap'; paper, but will get much better prints if you pay a little more for ';high brighness, ultra white 90gsm'; paper compared to bog standard 80gsm copier paper.

Print times are also misleading, an inkjet has to print 1 line at a time, while a laser does entire page at a go, but lasers are in 2 classes, ';parallel'; prints all 4 colours at once (eg Konica Minolta 5400 series) or ';4 pass'; where each colour is added to intermediate belt and THEN to paper on 4th turn (eg KM 2500 series) Other manuf use similar technologies.

If you only ever print 1 page at a time, diff between ink and laser is less, BUT if you print multi page documents, laser will usuually be quite a bit quicker, and most multi pass lasers have a ';mono only'; option to print black only much quicker.

I'd say take a sample of what you are likely to print, create a PDF of it, and take it to sellers oin a memory key and ask if they can let you see a sample so you can compare outputs.
I don't know too much about brands or models of laser printers, sorry.

Most people don't buy laser color printers for many reasons

here are a few

1) to expensive

2) don't want to have to deal with toner

3) too many cartridges

4) takes too long to print in color

5) too big

6) can be finicky at times

i have a hp deskjet f380 - it is a lower end inkjet but it is inexpensive, it conserves ink, it is quite, it prints fast, and it is small.

I think that any laser printers are meant for the office
Consumer level laser printers generally do not do photos which is an important feature for most people.

The toner for one is a huge expense, and if you are not printing a high volume, rarely worth the added cost.

Aside from he toners you will also have an image transfer kit, fuser and drum until that will need to be replaced usually within the printer's service life, all come at a huge cost.

Size does matter. Laser printers are large, and usually not practical for a small home office, or student use.

Cost, the start of u cost of a laser printer is usually 4-5 times that of a solid multifunction ink jet unit.

It is also much easier to buy ink jet cartridges as they are more widely available.

  • Can laser printer paper work with inkjet printers? And vice-versa? Because I need a glossy paper. I must know.

I need a glossy paper for a project, and there's two types at my nearest Office Depot. There's a laser and an inkjet version. Now, I have an inkjet at home, and a laser printer at work, but I'm not sure if the laser printer works right. I was wondering if the laser will work on the inkjet and vice-cersa. Thanks in advanve. Can laser printer paper work with inkjet printers? And vice-versa? Because I need a glossy paper. I must know.
Be careful here. You're talking about a glossy paper. This is different from standard papers.

Laser printers use a heated roller (fuser) to fuse the toner to the paper.

This is where glossy paper for an inkjet printer can be a problem. The fuser can melt the glossy film. Some types seems to survive, but it's not a garauntee.

Going the other way around, printing from an inkjet printer on to glossy paper for a laser printer may or may not work. The material used to make the surface of the paper glossy may not allow the ink to absorb into a layer and ';stick';, so to speak.

Yes, sometimes it works for one type of paper to be used in another type of printer, just be careful and understand that it may cause problems. Can laser printer paper work with inkjet printers? And vice-versa? Because I need a glossy paper. I must know.
For a glossy finish the papers are not interchangeable.

There is a great difference in how the inks are composed of and how they are distributed.
there is a small difference wheter you use glossy paper for your laser and inkjet both printer will work on glossy paer whether it is for laser or inkjet use it
You should have no problem with it. Inkjet printers work on almost all types of paper. When you set up your print job, make sure you tell your printer what kind of paper you are using (Glossy).

I use a Canon inkjet printer and all modern printer paper (even stuff for xerox type jobs) works in it.

    Best of luck.

Do laser printers print colors? And, when you hook up the printer turn the computer off or leave it on?

When you buy the printer it will come with an instruction manual and an installation disc and these will tell you how to set it up and when to turn on or off the print/computer. It's usually a very simple process.Do laser printers print colors? And, when you hook up the printer turn the computer off or leave it on?
Most modern printers are going to attach via USB, you can attach with the computer on or off. If you attach while it is on, it will ask you to install the drivers provided. If the printer is new you should have an install guide and it usually asks that you install the software before physically attaching the printer so that the driver will be ready and will function without you doing anything once you do plug it in.

Most lasers do not print colors, they print in a grayscale, so you will still see a picture, it will just be black/white and lots of different greys representing colors. Color lasers are starting to become more affordable but they do not give as high a quality of color as an inkjet.Do laser printers print colors? And, when you hook up the printer turn the computer off or leave it on?
You would need a color laser printer to print in color. I don't quite understand your 2nd question. If you mean when installing the printer, leave the computer on.

What do laser jet printers need?

They are not ink printers so I assume they don't need ink. They need just simple paper? What do laser jet printers need?
No that's not the case you need a toner cartridge just open your laser pull out the drum and the toner is in there simple to replace they last for a long time which leads to this illusion

If its a colour laser there are differnt colour toner cartridge to change

Hope this helpsWhat do laser jet printers need?
    They use normal paper

But instead of ink cartridges they need toner

In many cases yes, your best bet is to set the print driver to print only in Black %26amp; White/Grayscale. When you've toggled this setting in the print driver the printer shouldn't be using any color toner at all.Do laser printers use color when printing gray? Our HP Laserjet 1600 seems to run through color quickly?
Yes, colour printers will often use all toners. Especially lower end units.

What is the difference between inkjet printers and laser jet printers?

An inkjet uses nozzles to spray ink on paper, while a laser printer is internally similar to a digital photo copier, and uses a hot fuser to melt carbon articles onto a sheet. Inkjets usually print color and are cheaper, but usually have crappy drivers and run slow. A good laser shouldn't cost more than a $100, support virtually all operating systems, and will print a real-world 20PPM. Cost per page for a laser is about two or three cents a page, and toner carts last 3000-7500 pages. What is the difference between inkjet printers and laser jet printers?

Is ';Brother'; a good, reputable and reliable brand for Mono/Laser Printers in Australia?

What about parts and service, should it be needed?

And availability and affordable replacement ink toners within Australia?

Particularly Regional Australia? Is ';Brother'; a good, reputable and reliable brand for Mono/Laser Printers in Australia?
It depends upon the model number. Service regardless of where you are is going to be in issue as not many people actually fix printers these days as the parts are quite costly. In terms of your consumable ink products, you want to ensure you have a model that uses minimal consumable parts. Some will require, toner, drums, and image transfer kits. ideally you will find a unit with a low cost toner and drum combo and no image transfer kit.

Before you make your decision ask the sales clerk about all the consumables. Price them out and research what their page yield is. Also, see if they are available in a compatible or third party Brand. Is ';Brother'; a good, reputable and reliable brand for Mono/Laser Printers in Australia?
I don't know about down in Australia, but in the USA they are excellent laser printers. Reliable and clean prints (no smudges), and it prints on a variety of paper types. Something a lot of printers can't do.

But before you buy this or any printer, check to see how much toner replacement cartridges cost in your area. This is what is really cost over time, not the printer.

This is know as the (TCO) Total Cost of Ownership, and it is something to check out on any item you buy.
Brother lasers, faxes, and multifunction devices have decent features, perform well, and are inexpensive.....but wait

BUT the toner is far from cheap. If you can get a good price on trade toner cartridges then I would recommend the product because the printers are inexpensive and reliable, in my experience.

Otherwise I go with the HP products.
    Just better than ';sister';

Does Non-Petroleum based toner make laser printers safer/healthier?

There was a report that came out of Queensland Australia that examined the particle emissions of laser printers having the same health effects as smoking due to their ink. I was wondering if the ink is instead soy/vegetable and/or water based would it negate the emissions all together, or is there some other chemicals involved that I do not know about?Does Non-Petroleum based toner make laser printers safer/healthier?
Am, the ';ink'; is just carbon, the same stuff you scrape off an oil lamp chimney. If you use ask.com and search on laser printer emissions (no quotes) you will get quite a few sources of discussion on this point. I've included one which you should find interesting. I believe that if you do not have printers concentrated in one room (where there are people) and there is reasonable ventilation, there should not be a problem. Placement of printers, from my prior employment experience, is local to the user group thus they are not concentrated. After reading the report, you will likely conclude (as I did) that this study is based on the ';stand close and inhale deeply for 72 hours'; approach used in many such test.

Do laser and inkjet printers provide an analogue or digital output?

Here is a good article which addresses your question:

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/When-Digi鈥?/a>

Why are laser printers superior to inkjet?

Inkjet printers use liquid ink, so the print can run if the paper gets wet. Also, the inks tend to soak into some papers, so they can cause blurred text.

Laser printers use toner (powder), not ink, that's fused to the paper with heat--so the print is not affected by moisture. This can also give a more professional appearance, especially with black printing.

Per-page costs are often lower for laser printing.

In general, I use my inkjet for color and photo printing and my laser printer for black printing, especially resumes and professional documents. Photo paper works *really* well with 6-color inkjet printers--with better results, actually, than laser for this purpose.

    掳 Speed of the printing

Although inkjets have closed the gap, laser printers are still faster

掳 Cost per page of printing

Laser printers cost more initially, but their price per page printed (in terms of toner versus ink and the types of paper required) is much less.

掳 Durability of the printed page.

Inkjet ink is often water soluble. Laser print is baked onto the page.

掳 The printers tend to be more durable, too, but then they cost more and have more complex components. Why are laser printers superior to inkjet?
Inkjet printers Must be used or the ink in the carts and nozzles dry up which creates problems. Laser printers toner never dries up. Printer can be left off for months and months, then turn it on and print without any problems.
Well inkjet ink can fade if you get it wet while laser ink won't fade with water. You can get waterproof inkjet ink, but it costs more I believe.

Plus I believe that the resolution is better.
Cheaper printing per page. More cost-efficient if all you need is black-on-white document printing in quantities.

Powdery toners (individual carbon particles are mixed in a polymer which melt in heat which binds to the fibers in the paper to make a durable image and do not require any drying time after printing) are used in laser printers. Lasers are generally larger in size than inkjets.

Liquid ink is used in inkjet printers. They produce tiny droplets of ink to print, the resolution is lower than the laser printers. The print is not as durable in general and require a short drying time.

Laser Printers have better quality text, as their resolution is higher. High resolution also helps the laser printers create precise fonts without fuzzy edges. Lasers are generally faster than inkjets. Inkjets are usually less expensive to purchase and maintain. What is the difference bettween laser and inkjet printers?

  • What basics should i know about laser printers?

a customer i was working for was clearing out her basement and gave me a Brother HL-1440 laser printer. nothing real great, i know. but what are the basics i should know about these printers? i think they are a lot different from owning an inkjet. how do i access the toner cartridge? where can i get toner? just tell me what things are different from inkjets. What basics should i know about laser printers?
The technical differences between inkjets and lasers are probably too numerous to detail here but basically inkjets are just that, printers that use microscopic ink droplets to create an image where as a laser printer uses toner which is like fine powder that is fused to the paper with a drum.

The main thing to look for when buying a laser printer is the duty cycle (how many copies per month) toner cost etc.

There is a good review of the Brother HL1440 at http://reviews.cnet.com/laser-printers/b鈥?/a> and for a good general rundown on lasers go to http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/鈥?/a>

Also note that the HL 1440 is a black and white printer only.color lasers are quite expensive. What basics should i know about laser printers?
they are very cost effective. the toner is expensive, but lasts for thousands of copies. They also use a drum which is very expensive but may last up to five toner cartridge changes. If the machine requires you to change the drum quickly, you may want to buy a new printer.
    the ink is very expensive

Why are Inkjet printers more popular than Laser printers?

Probably because the initial cost is lower. Also most injet printers are smaller than laser.

Toners in a laser are more expensive but people dont realize that they go a heck of allot further than a inkjetWhy are Inkjet printers more popular than Laser printers?
Inkjets are cheaper, print photos at higher resolution, take up less desk space, ink cartridges are cheaper (though they dont print as many pages). You can get an Epson all in one with scanner/copier for as little as $30. An entry level black laser without scanning is $50. A color laser is $100 and if you add scanning it's even more.

Can budget color laser printers produce photo quality results?

I don't want to spend more than about $700 so if not, I will get an inkjet insteadCan budget color laser printers produce photo quality results?
no. the pictures look ok on laser but it is not the same as ink jet , inkjets use a liquid ink and lasers use a powder you will not get the same results. It you are doing photos stick with ink jet it is more expensive to operate but much better pictures.

Try the Printer Manual. It tell you how you can logon to the Print Configuration utility via Web browser. There are many settings in N/W printers that you can customize this way. After this is done there should not be any confusion.

W.r.t Prints being slow 1) check the Printer manual for optimum settings for printing large volumes

    2) On clients, enable printer spooling, which actually prints the documents to a buffer before sending it to the printer. If this is on, then try disabling it coz there might not be enough disk space to spool the document (C:\ Drive).

Do laser printers print with color and how does it work?

please to describe this dont use big words. and i also want to know more info on ink jet printersDo laser printers print with color and how does it work?
Yes laser printers can print colour.

Basically a laser printer uses toner which is a powder. There will be a drum (a round cylinder) on the inside of the printer that is statically charged ( like rubbing a balloon on your head) and the powder based toner will be attracted and statically cling to it.

The purpose of the laser is to basically draw on the drum what needs to be printed. When its drawing on the drum its charging or uncharging portions of the surface of the drum so the powder will staticly cling to the parts that need colour and won't to the places that don't.

Inside the printer there will be 4 different colours of toner; cyan magenta, yellow and Black. The printer will combined those 4 colours in different amounts to give you lots of colours.

Once all of the toner is in place on the drum the paper will come and will be given a charge that is stronger then the drum. The paper will pass under the drum and since its static charge is greater then the drum the powder will jump onto the paper and stick as it passes by.

Once the paper takes all of the toner as it passes the drum it will move into a part called a fuser which are hot rollers which melt the loose powder that was only being held on by static. When the powder melts it bonds into the paper.

Inkjet uses a liquid ink of the same 4 colours, cyan magenta yellow and black (some can have more to give you even more colours). An inkjet will basically feed a paper in a little bit at a time.

It has a nozzle with tiny holes which will spray ink dots and when combining all the 4 colours gives you many colours. The nozzle will move from side to side like a typewriter. It will spray ink onto the paper from one side to the other then inch the paper forward a little bit and continue with the next line until its complete.

    Hope that helps,

CheersDo laser printers print with color and how does it work?
you can get colour, or black and white laser printers.

They are usually intended for commercial use, as they are faster and produce better quality print than home printers such as inkjet.

Laser printers use toner cartridges which can be VERY expensive - inkjet refills are very much cheaper - check them out on Ebay.

There is an excellent article all about laser printers on Wikipedia - see below

Even if you could find it, you'd be disappointed by the results, I bet. Usually you're cheaper to spend a bit more on the printer, otherwise you get heart failure when ya replace the toners.

Ask if it needs consumeables other than toners also, some require ';drum units'; too.

Check life of a toner (usually rated as pages of 5% coverage) and compare this with pcost to get ';cost per page'; A more expensive printer to buy usually will cost you less through it's life.
I saw one today that was around $200 (American) for a Samsung, which is the cheapest I have seen, with the color toner being around $120. Not sure about the black toner cost.

Are colour laser printers cost effective?

It's well known that for business printing, black and white laser printers are more cost effective than inkjet printers. Does the same apply for colour laser printers? Are colour laser printers cost effective?
    That depends upon the printer.

There are some low end HP printers Such as the CLJ 1600 and 2600 which are obscenely expensive to run. You will pay about $350 for a set of cartridge and get about 1500 pages out of them.

However if you were to buy a HP Business Inkjet which takes 88Xl cartridges, you will spend $100 on a set of cartridges and get about 1000 pages out of them.

They trick is to always look at how much you are printing per month, page yeilds and consumable cost before buying a printer.

Are laser printers better and more cost effective than inkjet printers?

A laser printer or even the new solid ink machine from Xerox is cheaper over the long run than an inkjet. For example...

A Canon i320 Color Bubble Jet Printer. The cost for the hardware can be as little as $55, depending on discounts and where you buy it. The average cost of the ink from Canon is $19 but the yield from that is a measly 170 pages. Even if you print very little, the cost quickly adds up:

Seven pages a day times 300 days equals 2100 pages 鈥?an ink bill of $235.60 per year. If you own the printer for three years, the cost of cartridges comes to over $700 or about 13 times the original cost of the printer. For the Epson Stylus C62 the ink bill would be over $1000 for three year's worth of printing.

Of course, seven pages a day is a conservative estimate 鈥?some small business or home offices print a lot more. Let's say your company prints 50 pages a day, 300 days a year. Using the above example, that equates to printing 15,000 pages annually. At that same rate, your annual ink cartridge bill would total $1,596.

An HP laser printer with an estimated machine cost of $400, combined with a $115 toner cartridge, yields 8000 pages. Printing 40,000 pages costs you $400 plus $460 for the ink for a total of $860. A Brother 1440 laser printer works out at about $930 for the same number of pages. That comes to around two cents a page, or eight times less than an inkjet printer.

SpencerLab, a digital-color laboratory in Melville, New York, tested the HP LaserJet 1320 and the Dell 1700 Laser Printers. According to Catherine Fiasconaro, director of SpencerLab, even when you calculate the cost of the toner and the drum (which has to be replaced about every 20,000 pages), HP high-yield monochrome cartridges cost about two cents per print, with Dell costing slightly more.

http://www.spencerlab.com/publications/Are laser printers better and more cost effective than inkjet printers?
Depends what you need the printer for?

For Black only printing, yes lasers are usually cheaper, faster, and more reliable than an inkjet printer. The exception would be the cheap laser printers (under $110).

For Color prints, it all depends on the cartridges. If you look at this http://oinkinkstore.wordpress.com/2008/0鈥?/a>

you will see that, cheap color lasers can cost a lot more than a very good inkjet printer. Plus on most color lasers, you can not print on photo paper.

As a general rule of thumb, the cheaper the printer is to buy, more expensive it is to own.Are laser printers better and more cost effective than inkjet printers?
I saw this questions and new the answer with ease...But to put it simple every one answering this did great....Laser will cost you less if you do a lot of printing. Inket is great for the seldom user. College students should get one that would work for their needs. Example. My dad is finishing up his dvance degree, he prints everything out he does twice and black only. I did the cost if he would of done that on an inkjet and it was over 6.5 times more expensive. Yikes....Hope all the answers here help you. For a brand if you want to know one. I prefer Samsung Products. Although, Xerox, and HP have great products for this as well.

Laser colour printers, which is the best one on the market?

I work from home and thinking of buy a new laser printer. I am looking for something that will print a ream (500 sheets) of paper in one go, easy to replace cartridges, a good repair service and not to big.Laser colour printers, which is the best one on the market?
You're asking a lot. Most small printers will struggle to do a full ream in a go, as their paper trays will not be big enough, especially the output tray.

Also the smaller printers tend to be aimed at the home office / small office market with smaller runs and higher costs per page.

You'd be better in the long run sacrificing some space and going for something more sustantial, possibly even looking to a small colour copier, such as the Konica Minolta Bizhub C200. Also remember a colour laser has not only toners to change, but image drums (usually 4 of them), image belts and fusers. If you are going to print a lot you NEED to factor in the costs of these so a copier on a leased plan with pay per print COULD be a cheaper option.

Can all laser printers print on both sides of a piece of paper?

Which models do or don't? Are the majority of laser printers capable of this? Can all laser printers print on both sides of a piece of paper?
Most printers will not be able to print on both sides in one print. The only ones that I have seen do it are also copy machines.

Most people print one side then put the paper back in and print the other side. Can all laser printers print on both sides of a piece of paper?
    No.

The feature you are looking for is called a ';duplexer';.

That is what flips the page to print on the other side.
The majority of laser printers and incapable of printing on both sides of the page. You are looking for a laser printer with an auto duplexer or duplexer, it will be outlines in the features of the printer.
no. i have one but it only print on one side of the paper.
    No

I have a brother printer and it does not do this. It takes about 5 extra seconds to flip over the page and just send it through again, so if you are looking for a printer like this I would say it is not worth the money.

  • Are laser printers dangerous for your health?

I recently heard that office laser printers can emit toxic fumes and particles that can cause cancer and respiratory illnesses. This made me concerned because I sit right next to one (a Ricoh Aficio SP 5100 N model). How can I find out if this printer is among the most dangerous ones (the high emitters)? Are laser printers dangerous for your health?
The printers that produce ozone are the ones that you are probably referring to as it was mentioned in the news a short time ago. Usually only very large printers still use this technology, but desktops and mid-size printers have moved away from this. You can usually smell the ozone being produced if they are that type.

Ozone producing printers use what they call corotron or scorotron wires to produce the charge, transfer %26amp; detack voltages for printing. Most of the desktop printers made today use electrostatic rollers instead of the wires and do not produce ozone. It's been a long time since I've seen one made with wires. You should be pretty safe with the one you mentioned, but the only way to know for sure would be to know if it uses rollers instead of wires for the high voltage charges that I mentioned above. I can't tell unless I saw one first hand.

The toner dust that was mentioned by someone else is usually very, very minimal and I wouldn't be concerned about that. If that was a concern I don't think you'd see laser printers everywhere, especially hospitals where they are everywhere (nursing stations, offices, clean rooms, etc.) I've even seen them in clean rooms where they make the silicon wafers for computer chips.

I wouldn't worry too much, but if you don't feel comfortable near it I'm sure you could request that it be moved to another location. Are laser printers dangerous for your health?
Not really unless you plan on standing right next to it for a hundred years sucking in the toner particles all day. It does emit a low dosage of toner emissions in the air which are considered to be a carcinogen, but seriously it would be like fifth or sixth hand smoking. I'm a toner tech.

What is the difference between ink jet, dot matrix and laser printers?

    Good Question!

A dot Matrix printer is an ';Impact'; printer.

It is called an ';Impact'; printer because it actually strikes the page it is printing on, through a ribbon that is coated with ink.

The ribbons usually last a long time.

They are mostly used for Text and Numbers, not pictures.

They are a bit loud, and usually pretty large in size

Impact printers are mostly used in an office that needs to print on ';Triplicate'; forms or ';Duplicate'; forms.

Ink jet / Bubble jet printers are like mini electronic ';Spray painters';.

They spray ';paint';, or ink, directly onto a page to create an image.

    Pretty cheap these days.

Really getting small and quiet, too.

They even ';paint'; a document, just like an image.

But the ink tends to run out pretty quickly.

Ink Jets / Bubble jets are the kind usually used on a home PC.

Laser printers are special because they don't have a moving ';Head';.

They are really quiet and usually are the fastest at printing.

    But they aren't very small.

Laser printers are also the most expensive of the three you mentioned.. (Especially the color ones!)

The toner lasts a really long time, but costs a good bit more to refill when it runs out.

A laser printer is the most durable, longest lasting of the three, probably because they don't have a moving ';Head'; to get jammed or broken.

When a print is made on a laser printer, a special wire called a ';Charger'; or ';Charging Wire'; first creates the image or document on the paper (invisible to you and me), then the paper is passed through the ';Toner'; which sticks to the image that the charger created.

Then the toner is ';Set'; using heat so that it will stay on the paper.

(That's why paper coming out of a laser printer feels warm to the touch)

I hope this answers your question!

and cheaper in the long run, but is more expensive to get started with

laser printer means a laser (focused light) is shoned on a drum that is light sensitive. where the light hits the drum becomes magnetized and sticks to the ink. the drum rolls and touch paper. the ink deposits on the paper and then some heating element cooks the ink to attach it permanently to the paper.

  • Do you think Brother laser printers make fewer carcinogenic emissions than those tested in a recent study?

A recent Australian study showed that some HP laserjet printers, though not all models, emit high levels of carcinogenic particles, worse than cigarettes - and also Toshiba and other makes. I suppose Brother laser printers have a different toner technology because they have replaceable drums as well as cartridges, so perhaps they are safer to be around than those that tested high. Is there any contributor with technical knowledge to comment on that? (Particularly Brother HL-1450, because I'm sitting right next to one!)Do you think Brother laser printers make fewer carcinogenic emissions than those tested in a recent study?
If you read more than one ';OMG we're all going to DIE'; article about the so called problem you will find out that it isn't that big a deal. Yes, a poorly maintained printer or one which has had toner spilled in it may release carbon dust to the air. The brand doesn't have a lot to do with it. A relative handful out of millions of printers were tested. And yes, we are all going to die (eventually, life is 100% fatal ).Do you think Brother laser printers make fewer carcinogenic emissions than those tested in a recent study?

also, which laser printer would you reccomend which is cheap and the toner is also cheap?Do Laser printer ink dry up like the little printers?
Toner doesn't dry like ink since it's not ink but dry powder. Sometimes toner may become firm, so all you have to do is shake toner cartridge.

As for recommendations, you can find printer you like, and check here: http://fillserv.com/printers.php?ref=4276 if inexpensive refill is available for printer you choose. Do Laser printer ink dry up like the little printers?
No Toner does not dry up like ink. Toner is a power and has to be heated up in order for it to stick to a page. The only thing you might have to do is vacuum out the printer once every few months or so to get rid of excess toner build up. I use a brother at work and am quite happy with it.

What paper is the best/safest for laser printers (not color)?

I purchased the Brother 2040 B/W laser printer. I have some black and white photographs and wanted to print them out with the laser printer. However, I've heard that I can't use gloss paper because the heat will melt the coating and ruin the printer. Is there high quality photo paper for laser printers? Does it make a difference if the paper is for color laser printers as opposed to black and white? Factors such as weight, iso brightness, gloss, matte...it is all becoming very confusing with such a wide selection.

The photos are pretty sharp and I want to use the highest possible quality paper that is the safest to use on the laser printer. I would like to get the most professional looking results possible with a laser printer. However, finding that paper is proving rather daunting!

Thanks for all your help! What paper is the best/safest for laser printers (not color)?
There are papers out there made just for laser printers, but with your printer just being a B/W you can use regular bond paper in it too. Glossy papers are produced in many ways, some with coatings some heat smoothed and on the package it should list recommend uses. In the print shop I worked at we ran many different types of paper in our B/W laser such as fancy papers, to letter head and parchment; as long as they don't have raised ink print on them. Just make sure that you don't go to a card type paper this is when you will start to have difficulty. Just keep in mind what you put through your machine because it does use heat to setup the toner. Your local office supply store should be able to answer all your questions if you don't see anything on the paper package.

If you are printing high resolution photo prints for best results use a bright white smooth laser paper. Hammermill makes the best one and if I recalled correctly it is about a 23lbs paper. What paper is the best/safest for laser printers (not color)?
You are correct about glossy paper.

I would choose a heavy weight paper and get the brightest I could. You may want to ask an associate at Staples or Office Max for a recommendation.

There is no difference between paper for color and b/w laser.
I am using an Epson glossy with my laserprinter with good results.

What happens if you use transparency paper meant for laser printers in an ink jet printer?

The ink slides right off and/or smudges easily. I don't recommend it. Get inkjet transparency paper, which has micro-perforations to hold the ink. Also, the inkjet transparencies have a thin, removable paper strip on one end of the transparency, so the ink jet printer has something to hold onto when printing the very end of the transparency.

Should be able to find some answers here.

But you should be able to plan based on the rated standards on the devices. Remember your laster printer doesn't use too much power on standby, so that should not be the main factor. If you want a Desktop protected by the UPS, then don't use the UPS to feed the laptop. Just plug the laptop straight to the wall. If power fails, the laptop will just use the battery. Really just buy a brand name device like APC, and you should be a happy camper.

How much I reduce the ink comsuption printing in draft versus Normal or Best on the ink jet and laser printers?

    Hi Edwin

Between normal and Draft, you save 60% of the ink. What happens in draft mode is that, the printer uses less ink because due to the output being at half the resolution than in normal mode.

As for Best vs Draft, you save 75% of the ink.How much I reduce the ink comsuption printing in draft versus Normal or Best on the ink jet and laser printers?
That depends upon the printer, it is generally anywhere from 20-50% on draft versus normal.

Best again depending upon the printer can use up to 6X the ink used to print on normal.

A laser printer lays down images as ink powder on a drum. This is then melted (they call it fused) onto ordinary paper. Colour lasers work like other colour printing technology using powders with the colours Cyan Magenta Yellow Black to create a multicolour result. How do multicolored laser printers work?
Multi colored laser printers use 4 separate toner cartridges - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black and mix these colors when printing to met many tones and shades. Today's color laser printers do very nice work including printing of photographs and are fast printing and economical to use, but if your real interest is in printing photos, an ink jet printer is your best bet. Among the lower priced ink jet printers I have found the HP printer series that uses the 02 series of ink cartridges

(6 separate color cartridges) to give excellent quality photo prints.

Maybe you are after a network one.

depends on printer, age manufacture etc. large office sized ones have many from hardware diagnostics to software small ones not so much

What is the difference between ink jet and laser printers and which one is best?

Inkjet : Sprays jets of ink which usually costs more than good champagne per litre, at the paper. For best quality you need proper inkjet paper.

Laser, uses microfine powder, laid onto paper through a complex but reliable process to give colours. (Oki's are LED printers, same idea but using an LED head not a laser)

All those people saying laswers cost more to run are WRONG., YES toners cost more to buy, BUT they go a way way way further than inkjet cartridges.

If you buy a colour laser thet's not the ';cheapest colour I can find'; type, thenthe cost per page WILL be lower than an injket, that's WHY offices use them, that and the speed. What is the difference between ink jet and laser printers and which one is best?
An injket ';sprays'; a liquid ink onto-into the paper. The ink is absorbed, and ';bleeds'; slightly. A Laser applies a powdered ';toner'; to a drum, then transfers that image to a piece of paper through electrostatic attraction (rub a balloon on your hair in the winter and stick it to a wall)

A fuser then MELTS the toner (plastic based powder) onto the surface of the paper.

A laser printer will produce crisper images, not subject to degradation by moisture/water, but generally costs more to print than an inkjet in color, but often more economical when printing only black/white/text.

There is also ';solid ink'; printers from Xerox now that melt a solid ink onto a drum, then apply that to the paper... Gives very nice images. What is the difference between ink jet and laser printers and which one is best?
An inkjet printer uses ink (like in a pen) to basically spray an image onto the paper where a Laser printer uses heat, and electricity to cause toner to adhere to the paper. Generally your costs will be lower with toner than with ink. Most ink jet printers are sold at a loss and the company makes money on the ink. Which is why Laser printers tend to be a bit more expensive. Laser printers are typically faster (more pages per minute (ppm) ) more accurate and toner cartridges last longer.
Laser is built for speed. (usually in black and white)

Inkjet is more on quality. (usually in all colors)

What do you want? Speed or quality?

If you want to write papers for school, work etc, definetely the laser, but if you want to print pictures, colored work.. definetely the inkjet.

Personally, I own a inkjet myself, I'm not a huge fan of speed, but rather quality.
An ink jet printer uses a fine mist of Cyan (blue), Yellow, and Magenta (pink) ink to produce pretty much any color you would want on paper.

A laser printer does the same thing with toner (like a copier).

A laser printer usually produces better quality printing but is more expensive to operate. (That toner ain't cheap!)

For me the decision was a trade off between laser quality and the expense. My thrifty side took over and I bought an HP DeskJet 930C (really old now and still kicking) ink jet printer. It does a great job on my photos and just about anything else I ask it to print.

    I hope that helps.

  • What's a good dpi resolution for laser printers?

Looking for a laser printer, our inkjet just broke, just wondering what are good features to look for.

Thanks! What's a good dpi resolution for laser printers?
200 DPI is fax quality. Basic text usually is 300x300DPI. Color pictures should be at least 1200x1200DPI for a decent picture. 600DPI just isn't that good. If you want to do just a few pictures and a lot of text the 2 printer solution might be best for you. A color inkjet for pictures and a black/white laser for documents. Before you buy anything though look at the consumables for that printer. Often they cost more in the long run than the printer does.

Inkjet and Laser printers, what are the pros and cons? Are there other printers besides these two?

Also which do you reckon would be better for printing stickers that would last a long time?Inkjet and Laser printers, what are the pros and cons? Are there other printers besides these two?
inkjet- better quality pics, cheaper ink, hassle of replacing ink more often, slower, but more efficient for the average user

laserjet-faster prints, higher toner costs, mess of toner getting everywhere when shaking cartridge, more business oriented

What is the meaning of DUTY CYCLE in relation to Laser Printers?

What will happen if i cross the duty cycle limit? my Samsung Laser printer got malfunctioned when i crossed the limit! What is the meaning of DUTY CYCLE in relation to Laser Printers?
duty cycle is just a recommended limit by the manufacturer and does not indicate the limits of the printer because setting changes the user can make. Duty cycle indicates amount of pages per month the computer can print without malfunction.

What is better inkjet printers or laser printers?

I dont need high quality photos. All i need is normal printing and nice quality. Also inkjet printers need ink cartridges. Do laser printers need something? What is better inkjet printers or laser printers?
Well better could be cheaper. The ink cartridges for an inkjet are a lot cheaper than laser printers. Also laser printers are much more expensive.

If you own a business where you can wright off the cost then get a laser but for home and small office an inkjet would be more cost effective.

And their are color laser printers on the market also. What is better inkjet printers or laser printers?
You can find laser printers for under $50 after rebate. THe problem is that they come with starter cartridges which hold less than half the normal toner, so they're good for less than 1,000 pages. The toner cartridges cost more than the printer, and often they can't be refilled properly. I tried refilling a Samsung 2010 and the prints came out too light. The same with a Brother 2040 until I learned that the starter cartridges are missing a $3 part. After I bought the starter gear, the refill worked. For about $6 in toner, I get about 2,000 pages, so the laser is faster, sharper and cheaper than an inkjet but only in black and white. For my Epson inkjets I buy compatible cartridges available here http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp
You can get good quality out of ink jet printers these days, so I would just go with one of those. Laser printers are much faster, but are also more expensive (especially the color ones), and use toner.

Sounds like for what you are wanting to do, it is best just to get an ink jet. You can up the quality on the print out in the settings, if you find that normal is not good enough.

    Best of luck.
If printing black and white, laserjets are faster, and you don't have problems with ink smears. If you need color, inkjets give better color quality. Laserjet uses what's called toner, just like a copier does.
